SHRAPNEL tells the story of two veterans of the Bosnian War, one American, one Serbian, who clash in the Appalachian Mountain wilderness. FORD is a former American soldier who fought on the front lines in Bosnia. When our story begins, he has retreated to a remote cabin in the woods, trying to escape painful memories of war. The drama begins when KOVAC, a former Serbian soldier, seeks Ford out, hoping to settle an old score. What follows is a cat-and-mouse game in which Ford and Kovac fght their own personal World War III, with battles both physical and psychological. By the end of the flm, old wounds are opened, suppressed memories are drawn to the surface and long-hidden secrets about both Ford and Kovac are revealed.

If you don't mind that good story and history facts are absent, than watch it
I strongly believe that a good movie must have its basis in historical facts, although we all know Hollywood tends to exaggerate and simply, make things up a lot. But, this movie disregarded this need completely and went for fiction, in reference to history that is. I suppose, counting on ignorance of average western-world movie watcher about the civil war in former Yugoslavia. However, the reception of this movie by the worldwide audience and its "success" shows that the movie failed even at that "ignorance" assumption. Certainly, just terrible efforts by Travolta to speak Serbian language, or act for that matter, as well as equally terrible efforts to correctly spell shop signs in Belgrade, all of that is also contributing to the effect this movie makes.
From the very start of the movie, we receive almost subliminal messages, and some not that much subliminal as part of the written introductory "history" lessons presented at the beginning. Heroic American military forces and their NATO allies liberate (unexpectedly not too) skinny people from something that looks like a concentration camp. They also discover rotting corpses in rail wagons. The references to Nazism and WWII genocide over Jews are clear.
However, the fact is that NATO never military intervened in Bosnia by using ground forces, and that they never liberated anyone from a single concentration camp, nor discovered any rail wagons with dead bodies. Also, the fact is that Serbian army never invaded "neighboring Bosnia" in 1992, as the only army in existence was Yugoslav Army (Serbian army didn't exist). The Yugoslav army was from 1945 stationed in their military barracks, placed all over Yugoslavia, of which Bosnia was a part of. Also, it would have been quite difficult for Serbians living in Bosnia and constituting over 40% of the population in 1992, "to invade neighboring " Bosnia with their forces as this would mean to invade on themselves. Figures about war casualties are grossly exaggerated also. Independent studies conducted by prominent international NGO's put number of casualties of civil war in Bosnia at around 100 000 people in total. This numbers include casualties belonging to all 3 main ethnic groups living in Bosnia: Bosnian Muslims, Serbs and Croats. So, there never was 200 000 casualties in Bosnian war and there certainly wasn't 200 000 people who died in a genocide. The purpose behind making such factual "errors", at the very beginning of the movie, especially since these are very easy to check, escapes me.
Historical facts are one thing and this movie is another thing, and these two don't have much in common. And I think this is felt throughout the movie, even for those who don't know much about history of Yugoslavia's break-up. But if you disregard the historical background completely, you might be able to somehow go through the movie. Especially if you concentrate just on the conflict of two guys, and try to forget the reason for it, although that might be difficult as it's supposed to be the backbone of the whole story. But don't concentrate. Just don't waste your time on this movie.
