Review :
A Film That Completely Negates Everything Previously Set Up
This is the first time I have ever written a review on this site. Let it be known that the original Kick-Ass is, in my humble opinion, the greatest superhero movie ever made. It can be viewed as a satire; it can be viewed as a fun superhero movie; it can be viewed as a brilliant film. The first Kick-Ass is a true masterpiece in that it not only set up an original idea that we've never seen before, but it was a blast to watch, too. It is one of the few movies I own and I constantly find myself introducing it to people that have yet to experience it.
Kick-Ass 2 negates everything that was brilliantly set in place by director Matthew Vaughn and writer Jane Goldman.
Gone is the wit, charm, excitement, and fun that made the first film so memorable. Instead, we are given a lazy movie with uninteresting characters, sloppy jokes, an excessive use of shaky-cam, and a depressing lack of gleeful violence that made the first film a treasure. Want to see Hit-Girl and Kick-Ass team up to save the city? Well, look elsewhere. Instead, these characters are replaced by infuriatingly unfunny side characters that are shown in costume far more than the titular character. I understand that the movie cannot be filled to the brink with action (some of the greatest moments from the first film are the poignant conversations characters had with each other,) but there is a serious lack of interesting stuff in here. Instead of having an escalating chain of events with lovable characters, Kick-Ass 2 is a random mess with random characters doing random things until a final battle just kind of happens.
Kick-Ass 2 is the kind of movie that the first Kick-Ass made a point to satirically analyze. No charm, fun, or poignancy to be found here. Instead, get ready for a bunch of loud noise. This is a review I don't want to write, but I am. Kick-Ass 2 ruins everything that the first film set up so perfectly that by the film's conclusion, it has quite literally contradicted the message of the first film. I have no intention of continuing this franchise as in one false swoop, it has become a joke.
